'Sonic The Hedgehog 2' Is The Most Successful Video Game Movie To Date

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has broken its predecessor's record for the best opening weekend for a video game movie.

Video game movies have a reputation of being a bit, well, rubbish. Generally speaking, they tend to be mediocre at best - the least offensive viewing experiences you can hope for are usually the ones that provide a very average, slightly forgettable viewing experience, with a subtle coating of gaming-themed paint.

For that reason, I think it's safe to say most of us were pleasantly surprised when the first Sonic movie released in cinemas in early 2020 and was pretty good, actually. Especially after the horrors that came with that first trailer, it didn't seem like it was going to do too well, but it performed super well at the box office - it currently holds the title for the highest grossing video game movie of all time, as well as the best opening weekend for a gaming movie. Well it did, anyway.

Be sure to check out our interview with Jim Carrey himself below, where we asked him what it's like to play Robotnik in the Sonic movies.

That's right, a new king has been crowned - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had a phenomenal launch in the US, earning an incredibly impressive $71 million at the domestic box office. As reported by Variety, that blows Sonic the Hedgehog's original record of $58 million out of the water.

Not only that, but globally, the sequel has already earned $141 million, meaning it's currently the fourth-highest grossing video game movie of all time, and only about $9 million away from surpassing its predecessor and taking the number-one spot. Given that the film literally only just came out in the US three days ago (and has only been out elsewhere for a week longer), it's literally only a matter of time before it takes the lead.

Despite the success, it remains to be seen what's going to happen with the series going forward with Jim Carrey thinking about retiring, and Sonic 2's producer already confirming that Robotnik would never be recast if he left. After all, the moustached villain's role in basically any Sonic media ever is basically as important as the speedy blue hedgehog himself. No doubt they'll find a way to make it work, though, because an entire "Sonic Cinematic Universe" is in the works, so prepare yourself for that (for better or worse).
