'Resident Evil 2' Remake Has Now Outsold The Original PlayStation Game

Dead good.

Less than one month into 2019, Capcom came out swinging with a genuine GOTY contender. Resident Evil 2 - the ground-up remake of the 1998 survival horror classic of the same name - was an instant hit. Critics and fans alike praised the remake as a stunning return to form for the long-running franchise, one that ditched the complicated plots and over-the-top action that'd become commonplace in the series for a more claustrophobic experience.

It was, simply put, a properly brilliant horror game. One that deserved every ounce of critical and commercial success. And make no mistake, it earned a lot of critical and commercial success. In its first week alone, Resident Evil 2 shifted an incredible 3 million copies worldwide. In just over a month, it had surpassed 4 million.

Now, Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 2 (remake) has hit another incredible milestone. The gruesome survival horror adventure has sold more than five million copies, putting it safely ahead of the 1998 version of the game's total of 4.96 million. Nicely played. Very nicely played indeed.

Again, I can only say that this is incredibly well-deserved, and an encouraging start to what I hope is a new golden age for Resident Evil. Presumably Capcom is similarly optimistic for the next game in the franchise, a remake of 1999's Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

Announced yesterday, the Resident Evil 3 remake is a complete re-imagining of the original game in the same vein as the wildly successful Resident Evil 2. Capcom previously suggested that Resi 3 would get a similar treatment to Resi 2, if the demand was there. It's safe to say it very much was.

Set in the hours leading up to and following Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 is all about S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine's escape from the zombie-infested Raccoon City. While trying not to get her arms pulled off by flesh-eating pests, she'll also have to deal with the relentless Nemesis - a hulking biological weapon designed to hunt her down and end her life.

"Intense combat and puzzle solving combine to deliver the heart-pounding final chapter of Raccoon City's collapse," Capcom wrote of the game in a press release. "The horrific settings from the original game and new content come to life as never before with RE Engine."

Resident Evil 3 comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3rd 2020. If it's even half as good as its predecessor, we're in for a particularly scary treat.
