Next-Gen Assassin's Creed Targeting 2022 Release, Rumoured China Setting

Ubisoft China do something new, I see.

Ubisoft will release the first (truly) next-gen Assassin's Creed game in 2022, with 2021 dedicated to supporting last year's excellent Assassin's Creed Valhalla wit further updates and expansions. The next game in the series will reportedly be developed by Ubisoft Sofia, along with support from other studios within the company.

This is according to French YouTuber and streamer xj0nathan, who claimed recently that for the rest of this year Ubisoft will focus on the two paid expansions for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, as well as its smattering of free content updates. We already have some idea of what new content to expect from the Viking adventure, including major expansions set in Paris and Ireland.

Once that's wrapped up, however, 2022 will shift the spotlight back to a brand-new Assassin's Creed title. The YouTuber doesn't have any major details on the next game in the series beyond the claim that it's being developed by Ubisoft Sofia, the studio responsible for Assassin's Creed Origins: The Curse Of The Pharaohs DLC, and 2014's Assassin's Creed Rogue.

Based on Ubisoft Sofia's previous work, it could be that the game the YouTuber is talking about is another smaller title or spinoff rather than the next main entry, but the mention of other teams lending support would seem to suggest something a little bigger. Take this with a pinch of salt for now, of course. What we do know for certain is that 2021 will be dedicated to Assassin's Creed Valhalla, so lets just enjoy what's left of the latest release while we have it.

I should also point out that the YouTuber didn't provide any information in regards to the next game's setting or time period, but previous rumours strongly hinted at an medieval China setting. Recently resurfaced art from Ubisoft Montreal concept artist John Bigorgne shows off traditional Asian architecture - most likely Chinese - surrounded by guards and a couple of small straw houses. There are also two figures on horses in the foreground wearing robes that bear the insignia of the Assassins.

It's not clear whether or not these pieces from Bigorgne are official, or if he was just working with some cool ideas on his own time. With that said Ubisoft concept artist Michele Nucera shared some Assassin's Creed artwork via his own ArtStation back in 2018. That piece was called 'Vikings Village', and would later be linked to the 2020's Viking RPG. So even if these concepts aren't for anything in an official capacity, they could be one day.
