Netflix Is Getting Classic Gundam Anime Movies And We’re So Amped

This is for the US, UK, and a “few” other regions.

Excitingly, the original Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy and the Gundam: Char's Counterattack movie are arriving on Netflix in two weeks time, so save the date, call in sick and order a mountain of takeaway to mark the occasion.

Sometimes, when you sit down to watch something on the streaming service, the selection is nearly overwhelming. Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling through what seems like thousands of shows and movies. This year alone, I've watched Community, Derry Girls, Narcos, Blown Away, Bridgerton, the Pitch Perfect series and all of the Shrek movies. Really something for everyone there in that list. Still, there's a clear absence of anime from the '80s and '90s. If you like your Studio Ghibli movies, then you're golden, but a lot of the most iconic shows in that genre are to be found on other streaming services such as Crunchyroll and Funimation. Totting up the various expenses from other things like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, it can cost an arm and a leg quite quickly.

Complain as I might, Netflix's range is really expansive. Like, did you know there's going to be an animated spinoff show about League of Legends? Check out the trailer here.

So, the announcement that the classic Mobile Suit Gundam movies are going to be available on Netflix soon is music to the ears of fans. Mobile Suit Gundam I, Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow, Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space and Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack are arriving in the US and UK version of Netflix, as well as a "few other regions'' according to What's On Netflix.

If your curiosity about the military science fiction series has been sparked, but you've never known where to start, then Mobile Suit Gundam has got your back. It's actually a compilation of the anime episodes first aired on TV following pilot Amuro Ray (with some slight alterations). Expectedly, Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow and Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space continue this format so you'll be an expert in no time. On the other hand, Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack is an adaptation of the novel High-Streamer, featuring the return of the formidable antagonist, Char Aznable. These movies arrive on June 18th, so be sure to check them out as soon as they release.
