Mobile games get a bad rap for being time-wasting money-sinks that only offer repetitive gameplay and at least 10 different ways to drain your wallet. Marvel Future Revolution will hopefully avert those trends since it looks like the kind of epic Marvel crossover that fans like myself relish.

Described as an open-world action-RPG with real-time combat, Marvel Future Revolution begins with multiple dimensions collapsing into each other, creating Primary Earth. With several different versions of the same planet all mashed together into one, it's up to a small band of earth's mightiest heroes to protect it from the usual supervillain threats.

Despite its surprisingly epic concept that would give the TVA in Loki a headache, there are only eight playable characters to choose from. Fortunately, they're all fan favourites: Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow, and Star-Lord.

What's more, each character can be fully customised, allowing you to swap out all four individual costume pieces to create a wholly unique version of the character. Be sure to check the website to see some examples since there are some wild combinations, with many of the costumes coming from previous Marvel comics and the MCU, alongside brand-new original ones. Some personal favourites are Spidey's Scarlet Spider costume - the outfit worn by his clone, Ben Reilly - and a punk-rock outfit for Storm. There's even a Hydra costume for Captain America if you just want to make yourself irrationally angry.
There will be a wide range of game modes, including multiplayer and co-op fare like boss raids against powerful villains such as the Maestro (that evil future Hulk last seen in Square Enix's Marvel's Avengers game), and battles against other players. And speaking of Marvel's Avengers, there's no doubt the characters in Future Revolution are a little more 'classic'-looking, if that's a thing that matters to you.
If you feel the roster is rather lacklustre at launch, you can most definitely expect future updates to add more characters. While the likes of Thor and Rocket Raccoon are already delegated to non-playable roles, hopefully we'll get to see other popular choices like Ms. Marvel or Ghost Rider be made playable down the line.

The game is free-to-play with in-game purchases so there's always a chance it will fall into that same pitfall as other mobile games, where the only way to make any meaningful progress is by spending lots of money. But, if you're the least bit curious, you can pre-register on the App Store or Google Play in preparation for its 25 August release. If you do, you'll receive a Costume Gift Box for one of the playable heroes.
