It's the talk of the town: Take-Two Interactive might be re-releasing Grand Theft Auto games as revamped remakes. While we wait with baited breath, a team of modders have been beavering away on Vice City 2 - Vice City transformed in the RAGE engine.

With the 20th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III approaching, the possibility of remakes of these classics has players practically levitating with excitement. Earlier this year, Take-Two Interactive responded to the rumours that there's a remastered collection of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the cards, and its reply raised some eyebrows. "It's a great and encouraging question," said CEO Strauss Zelnick. "I'm kind of inclined to leave it more as a statement than a question and any update on our release schedule will come from Rockstar Games."

That's not a "yes," and that's not a "no," either. These games are generally considered to be the cream of the crop and an example of the ways that the medium could be utilised to tell a story in a newly emerging format. Remakes would, theoretically, rake in the cash from longtime fans and those who want to try these games out for the first time.

Take-Two Interactive might not be ready to show its hand, but this project from RevTeam takes Vice City and reimagines it in Grand Theft Auto IV's engine. The result is very pretty and a testament of the effort that it took to build the world again in the RAGE engine. This is not as straightforward as a port and this Vice City 2 even boasts its own theme tune.

"The atmosphere of the good old Vice City in modern realities, where the city is not easily converted, but assembled completely from scratch," described RevTeam on the mod's entry on ModDB. As well as seven different radio stations, the player is also able to enjoy two payphone missions, 20 hidden packages, 10 unique jumps, and four missions regarding Ricardo Diaz. These are The Chase, Phnom Penh '86, The Fastest Boat and Supply & Demand.

However, I'd advise you to move quickly to download the mod while it's still live. Take-Two Interactive targeted mods that involved remakes of Los Santos or Vice City as they ran a risk of threatening the company's economy.
