New 'Fortnite' Mode Is Basically 'Among Us' In All But Name

The similarities between the two are difficult to deny.

Epic Games announced the new Impostors mode in Fortnite and it's gone down a treat. However, it is stunningly similar to the sensational Among Us and the developers have now spoken out about the new mode.

In Impostors, ten Fortnite competitors are thrown onto The Bridge and eight Agents of the Imagined Order must complete tasks that contribute to the running of the facility. The other two players are Impostors and are able to sabotage and eliminate the Agents to chip away at the cooperation between the goodies. The players will discuss who they think is acting oddly in the centre room of The Bridge and whoever attracted the most suspicion will be ejected.

The impostor in Among Us is a toonified terror that dispatches their victims with silly snapshots of dismal demises. Yet, this gritty and realistic short film shows off how horrifying it would be to be trapped on the spaceship and not know who to trust. Check it out here.

It sounds so like Among Us, it's almost comical. Now, the core concept of the popular game isn't that unique - think of Garry's Mod's Trouble in Terrorist Town, Jackbox's Push The Button, or Werewolves. However, using the name "Impostors," the inclusion of tasks, discussions in a big central space... it's like the long lost sibling of Among Us from studio Innersloth.

Members of the indie game's team have expressed their annoyance on social media, though, there isn't much to be done as Innersloth didn't patent the mechanics of Among Us. "It would've been really, really cool to collab," said community director Victoria Tran. "Like game mechanics fine, those shouldn't be gatekept, but at the very least even different themes or terminology makes things more interesting?"

Programmer Adriel Wallick also added that she was sad to see the similarities between Impostors and Among Us. "Everything in the world was already feeling insurmountable, so this was just another fun reminder of how tiny we all really are," she explained. Fortunately, the game's community has rallied round the team and praised them for all of their efforts over the last year.
