EA Just Had The Best June Quarter Sales In Its History

Cash. Wonga. Money.

EA has just had its best ever June quarter for sales thanks, in no small part, to the Coronavirus pandemic forcing people to stay at home and game more.

The not-so-shocking data was shared by EA in their reported earnings for quarter ending June 30th (as picked up by GameSpot) revealing that it was in fact the highest earning quarter in the company's 38-year history. Wow.

So, what exactly does the most successful June quarter in one of the most successful companies in the industry look like? Well, a lot of zeros following dollar signs is the answer. A total net profit of $1.46 billion(!) for the period left EA with a staggering gross profit of $365 million. What is perhaps not surprising, is that microtransactions (or live services) accounted for almost $1.1 billion of that overall take.

EA's CEO Andrew Wilson was keen to express how pleased he was with the company's movements (and let's be honest, why wouldn't he be pleased) and said the following of the success:

"This was an extraordinary quarter, and we're deeply proud of everything our teams at Electronic Arts are doing for our players and communities. We launched new games, deeply engaged players in our live services, and welcomed tens of millions of new players to our network. It was an unprecedented first quarter of growth in our business, and we will continue building on that strength with more innovative experiences, more groundbreaking content, and more ways to connect with friends and play great games throughout the year."

As an industry that naturally requires people to sit indoors and play games (not you, Nintendo Switch, you can go outside) gaming has profited handsomely from the millions of extra pairs of thumbs twiddling controllers for the last 6 months or so.

In the case of EA, it seems that titles like The Sims 4 hit record highs during the period, reaching some 30 million players to date. Apex Legends performed admirably too, with the recent Season 5 rivaling the high-water mark set by the game's first season.

These bewildering numbers are likely to have been supplemented by the fact that EA has begun bringing many of its most beloved titles to gaming platform Steam, to an audience ready to embrace a catalogue of nearly 30 games including Mass Effect 3, Star Wars: Battlefront II and more.
