DC has been making a huge push to improve its LGBTQ+ representation of late, and that push continues in the upcoming Superman: Son Of Kal-El #5.

For those that might follow DC comics all that closely these days, Clark Kent's son, Jon Kent, recently inherited the mantle of Superman. The idea of mentees picking up the identity of their mentors is nothing new in comics, of course. Dick Grayson was Batman for a brief stint, for example, and Jon is so far doing a fine job of upholding his old man's values.

Clark is still out there fighting the good fight in Action Comics, of course. But his son is, for now, Earth's only Superman. As reported by IGN, the latest issue chronicling the ongoing adventures of the 17-year-old Jon Kent as the man of steel also confirms that the character is bisexual.

Writer Tom Taylor confirmed to IGN that Jon will enter into a relationship with Jay Nakamura, a hacktivist who also happens to be a huge fan of Jon's mum: Lois Lane. If you've been reading Superman: Son Of Kal-El, you probably won't be all that surprised.

"Over the years in this industry, it probably won't surprise you to hear I've had queer characters and storylines rejected. I felt like I was letting down people I loved every time this happened" Taylor told IGN.

"But we are in a very different and much more welcome place today than we were ten, or even five years ago. When I was asked if I wanted to write a new Superman with a new #1 for the DC Universe, I knew replacing Clark with another straight white savior could be a real opportunity missed. I've always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes. Today, Superman, the strongest superhero on the planet, is coming out."

Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 will release on Tuesday, November 9.
