Microsoft is now offering full refunds to Cyberpunk 2077 players, owing to the poor performance of the game across last-gen consoles.
In effect, it joined Sony in the fiasco, which pulled the game from the PlayStation Store following an inundation of refund requests when CD Projekt Red promised consumers that they'd be able to get their money back. "First of all, we would like to start by apologising for not showing you the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase," said the studio in a statement. "We should have paid more attention to making it run better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One."

Sentiments aside, that wasn't the case, and people found that their refund requests bounced back as you're only eligible for a digital refund if the game "faulty". Well, there's faulty, and then there's faulty. After the studio sung the praises of the jaw-dropping reactivity and complexity of Night City, players were confronted with possessed and explosive cars, melting faces, tiny trees all over the map, and characters' private parts poking through their clothes. It might be the worst place to live in 2077, but I don't think that this is what the game was referring to in its cinematic trailers and promotional material.
In addition, when Sony removed the game from its storefront, all eyes were on Microsoft. CD Projekt Red and Microsoft had been closely involved owing to a marketing partnership between the two companies, and there's even a themed Xbox One X bundle with a controller that is inspired by Johnny Silverhand. Now, it looks like the talks have concluded with the assurance that Xbox players will be able to refund their digital copy of Cyberpunk 2077, but it will remain on the Microsoft Store for now.
"We know the developers at CD Projekt Red have worked hard to ship Cyberpunk in extremely challenging circumstances," said a Microsoft spokesperson in a statement provided to GamesIndustry.biz. "However, we also realize that some players have been unhappy with the current experience on older consoles. "To date, we have granted refunds to the vast majority of customers who have requested one. To ensure that every player is able to get the experience they expect on Xbox, we will be expanding our existing refund policy to offer full refunds to anyone who purchased Cyberpunk 2077 digitally from the Microsoft Store, until further notice.
