Call Of Duty: Warzone will see one of the most controversial perks taken down a peg or two with a new counter in the High Alert perk. Buckle up, the meta's about to get a shakedown.
Dead Silence muffles player movements as well as boosting a player's speed, and getting an elimination while it is active refreshes the perk's duration. In a battle royale, where time is of the essence, Lady Luck is fickle, and even rookies are able to take down players with thousands of hours in the game, an advantage like this simply isn't passed over. Moreover, it's a perk that doesn't possess a pitfall to temper its power. Stopping Power gives the player recoil, Deployable Cover only activates after a lengthy animation, and Recon Drone leaves the player with no way of knowing who's about to creep up behind their Operator. As a result, plenty of players are manipulating Dead Silence to get the edge over their opponents, and you can't blame them.

You can, however, be grumpy over how popular the perk is. "Died 4 times yesterday getting shot in the back cause the enemies had dead silence. Every single time I thought to myself 'what could I have done differently?'" mused Fundthemental on Reddit. "Nothing. That's the answer lol." To add insult to injury, a recent glitch has reared its head that gives players infinite Dead Silence, allowing them to scurry round the map picking off the competition without any announcement of their arrival. "Having a perk that everyone picks over everything else isn't healthy game design [in my opinion]," said Underman514. Raven Software has apparently heard the cries of the community, and Dead Silence's effectiveness will be diminished to some degree in a forthcoming patch.

"We are excited to share that we are planning the debut of two new Warzone-specific Perks," explained the developer in the announcement. "Alongside them, High Alert will also be receiving an update that allows players to hear Dead Silent footsteps." High Alert is a perk that causes an orange flash whenever an enemy looks at you, which is all very well and good, but by the time you react you might have had your health whittled down to nothing by your foe. In adding this alteration to detect players using Dead Silence, this will imaginably increase the viability of High Alert and encourage creativity in the meta.
Some might be unhappy to see Dead Silence's speed boost remain, but the change to High Alert is something to experiment with and see how it plays out after the patch arrives. Additionally, the developer revealed that there is a "long-awaited" weapon on the horizon for the battle royale, which is thought to be the CX-9, an SMG which would have been included in Modern Warfare 2019. We'll keep you in the loop once we know more.
