Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta players are finding that their controllers are abruptly disconnecting and switching off while in matches, which is very fun.
At the moment, the Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta has only been open to PlayStation 4 players, but they have been through the wringer. As well as unearthing references to the loot boxes of Black Ops 4, the beta feels funny to a proportion of players, and a few had even pointed the finger at Treyarch for altering important elements of the alpha without proper notice. Turns out, the developer hadn't changed anything, but there's still something that is causing dissatisfaction in the community, and the newest concern is the spontaneous controller malfunction.
One player, TheTimmyBoy on Reddit, explained what had happened to them. While they waited for the match to kick off, they were looking at their phone. "When I went to select my class the game still hadn't started, so I thought, I'm good, haven't missed anything, but I then noticed I couldn't select anything. My controller (fully charged) was off!" they said. "I hit the PS button and the controller's LED just flashed white for about 30sec without connecting. I tried another controller, same thing. I tried plugging them into the console and hitting the PS button again on both of those same controllers (typical way to pair) and same result."

Lots of fellow players are reporting that they've seen this strange disconnection bug. "This literally happened to me right now," replied Reddit user jwater0122. "i was feeding my pets before selecting a class and i come back to my ps4 and controller completely froze. had to manual power down the console and start over. glad i wasn't the only 1!" Weirdly, the common thread in all of these stories is that the game will switch off the DualShock if the player doesn't hop to it when choosing their class. Players have shared some sort of a solution, which is only to be very quick when you're at this stage in the match.
This isn't an ideal situation for new players, who might want to scroll through what sort of class they'd like to try out for a match or two. It isn't an ideal situation for veterans either, who expected that leaving their controller idle for a few moments wouldn't lead to the panic-inducing consequence, "Oh no, is my console and/or its peripherals totally toast?"

Thankfully, Activision has been alerted to this bizarre bug, and is actively looking into what the cause is. It is hoped that their investigation also uncovers what is giving rise to these network issues which makes players much more vulnerable than they were in the alpha. As a result, both the developer and the players will be much happier with the state of Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ahead of its launch in November.
