The next entry to the Call of Duty series is apparently going to be titled Call Of Duty WWII: Vanguard but will be set in the 1950s, according to site ModernWarzone.

Importantly, this is said to be a code name or working title for the new game, so it's possible that it won't have this name at the end of its development. Code names are pretty cool, though, and they do have some use outside of the company as well as protecting secrets from competitors. The ones used for the Star Wars films range from the utterly obscure to clever nods that feel like an in-joke between you and Lucasfilm. Two examples: The Phantom Menace was referred to as "The Doll House," and Solo was disguised with the name "Red Cup." The first two titles are totally unrelated to each other in order to discourage spoilers, but the second two titles are actually linked, because those red cups used in beer pong matches are also known as... Solo cups. Nice.

So, the point I'm making is that some code names are able to shine a little light on the content of the project. Activision is keeping things under wraps for the time being, and the only real tidbit of information that we've gotten is that Warzone will be a crucial cog in the future of the series. Rumours point towards Sledgehammer Games as the primary developer of the new game, and interestingly, they haven't had a turn holding the reins since Call of Duty: WWII, which was released in 2017. Yet, if we consider the whispers that the game itself will be set in the 1950s, following the end of the Second World War, then this title should be questioned.

It's plausible that the game does feature the Second World War and small sections of the game will take place in the Korean War, which occurred in the early 1950s and involved American soldiers aiding South Korea against incursions from North Korea. The White Tigers were a unit contained within the 8th US Army consisting of American and Korean soldiers who worked to "gather intelligence, conduct raids and sabotage, rescue POWs, recruit and lead guerrilla armies and create confusion in the enemy's rear." And, what was another title that was bandied about for Call of Duty 2021? Call Of Duty: Guerrilla Warfare.

As a result, Call Of Duty WWII: Vanguard may be the work-in-progress title for Call Of Duty: Guerrilla Warfare. Or, vice versa. I can't decide which one I prefer out of the two options, but all that I am sure of is that it is a much better title than Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
