BMW's Idea Of A Gaming Chair Is Ugly As Hell

BMW's Idea Of A Gaming Chair Is Ugly As Hell

It's more car than it is chair.

Look, I'm not going to argue that gaming chairs are the prettiest parts of a gaming set-up because they're often the ugliest. The majority of the chairs you probably see are Noblechairs or SecretLabs (I unapologetically opted for the bright pink D.Va variation when I indulged my deteriorating back during lockdown) or one of a thousand other racecar inspired seats. But now BMW has taken it one step further and made a gaming chair that looks like it's part-chair, part-BMW i3.

Spotted by PC Gamer, The Rival Rig is a combination of car design and gaming merch we've never seen before. Though it's only a concept, and not confirmed for a commercial release, it has wild amounts of functionality. If ever produced, it would have both a "Microclimate Control System" and "Adaptive Seating" just like a high-end vehicle would, but it's reported that it would have its own AI system hooked up to sensors, air pads, and actuators to make your comfort its top priority.

The concept for The Rival Rig comes from the Designworks team in collaboration with BMW, and though it might look like a car, it's also apparently directly influenced by the aesthetics you might see in games.

In a press release from Golem, the president of Designworks, Holger Hampf, says: "The Rival Rig by BMW and Rivalworks, more than any other project before, was about pushing the boundaries of human capabilities. What we wanted to achieve is a gaming rig design that takes both technology and aesthetics in this field to the next level. Our goal was to create the most comfortable seating, hand posture and head movement situation, that allow the gamer to fully immerse herself or himself and experience a sense of weightlessness. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for a designer to work on a project like this as we were able to play to extremes in terms of technology."

As we said, it's not yet known if we'll ever see something like this on the market, but that might be for the best. This gaming seat would be ridiculously expensive and yet, look like you'd just parked a motorcycle in the middle of your home.
