One of the main reasons, as you may know, is the well-documented semiconductor shortage that has effectively prevented Sony and Microsoft from building as many consoles as they would actually like to sell. There's also the issue of scalpers and internet conmen taking advantage of scarce supplies to boost their own wallets. It's all pretty gross.
But while not being able to get a PS5 at all sounds like a dire situation, thinking you've secured one in time for Christmas only discovered you've been played like a cheap viola is even worse.
This is exactly what happened to Reddit user Jouislones, who believed they'd gotten hold of the coveted new-gen console via Amazon. A few days later, what they receive in the post was not a shiny new PS5, but a massive bag of rice.
This isn't the first time an Amazon customer has ordered a PS5 and received something completely different instead. Last year there were reports of would-be PS5 owners being sent cat food, air-fryers, and indeed, bags of rice. Poor Jouislones isn't alone.
It's been suggested that there are sinister motives at play here, with Amazon delivery drivers allegedly swapping the consoles with random objects of a similar weight so that they could keep the PS5 and pass the botched delivery off as a mistake on Amazon's part.
One customer even managed to record CCTV footage of an Amazon driver seemingly making off with a PS5 last year, prompting the retailer to promise to look into the issue.
Whether this latest rice delivery was a genuine mistake or a sly attempt at pinching someone else's PS5 remains to be seen. Whatever the case, Amazon is actually making Jouislones return the rice before they can get a refund, which is... not very Christmassy.
