In case you're after new horror games to play this Halloween, this brand new release is one to put on your radar.
If you're a horror game fan, you've probably played all the classics; Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Amnesia.
Although the details are mixed, these types of games usually either put you into the role of a trained soldier or an ordinary everyday person.
So, what happens when you take a horror premise and put the player into a role of something that isn't a person? Well, you get Penguin Colony.
Advert
Penguin Colony is a new game by developer Origame Digital, the creator of the first person photography game Umurangi Generation.
The game is described as "cosmic horror through the eyes of a penguin", and the truth of that couldn't be more accurate.
Indeed, you play as a colony of penguins who bear witness to cosmic supernatural events in the deep Antarctic plains. Set in 1939, the Nazis and Kaitiaki are travelling to answer the call of an ancient being that lies deep within the continent, with one group seeking to use its power for their own means, and other returning it to its slumber.

With all the commotion, the strange sights and sounds these humans make has attracted the interest of the local penguin colony. In the game, you take control of these penguins as they follow the humans, making new discoveries as they do, and witnessing various the unexplainable events as they unfold.
It's also narrated by Lenval Brown, whose voice you might recognise as the narrator from Disco Elysium.

Penguin Colony is a surprise indie horror hit success
In the game, you get a variety of different penguins to play as, with each one you need to swap between to solve puzzles. It's hard to get into more of this without posting spoilers, but in true cosmic horror fashion, expect a lot of things to not make sense while also being outright terrifying.
The story unfolds as you find photographs and collect insights which shed light on the overarching story, but the fact that you're a penguin adds to the feeling of confusion that comes from the story.
Penguin Colony is a "part adaptation, part re-imagination" of H.P. Lovecraft's mythos, which encompasses stories written by the author that feature a pantheon of cosmic entities like Cthulhu. Lovecraft has had a massive influence on video games, particularly horror ones, and Origame Digital has not shied away from these inspirations.
Some of the original Lovecraft stories the developer cites as direct inspiration include At The Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Out of Time, with the former in particular featuring gigantic penguins as a major plot point.
Available this week on Steam, Penguin Colony currently has a demo you can check out if you want to give it a go.
The demo features around half an hour of gameplay, allowing you to get a taster of the full game, and is still available on Steam to download now.
As we're just under two weeks away from Halloween, it might be one of the best games you can check out this month if you're after something a little frightening.
