Fallout: New Vegas Cut Romance Quest With Last Character You’d Expect

The recently unearthed prototype builds of Fallout: New Vegas are hiding a wealth of cut content

Modders have been combing through the recently discovered prototype builds of Fallout: New Vegas, and they’ve stumbled upon a rather disconcerting cut romance that I honestly wish had stayed undiscovered.

Fallout: New Vegas had a somewhat troubled development. The game was developed by a relatively small team of 65 staff members at Obsidian Entertainment, and they were reportedly given only 18 months to finish the game so that it wouldn’t clash with the release of Bethesda’s little-known indie game Skyrim.

It’s easy to forget now, but Fallout: New Vegas was a mess when it launched in October 2010. It took several patches over the course of a year to get it into a decent state, and the PS3 version is still subject to a bunch of game-breaking issues due to its low RAM.

Considering Obsidian Entertainment’s deadline, and the issues they ran into working on the PS3 port, it’s no surprise that they had to cut a lot of content from the game before release.

Some of this content was left behind in the retail versions of the game, which modders have been able to partially restore, but a recently uncovered prototype build of the game has revealed that much more was left on the cutting room floor than we previously assumed.

Earlier this week, an “organization dedicated to discovering, restoring, and releasing canceled video games & video game prototypes” by the name of Games' Past released a video detailing their discovery of three unique prototype builds for Fallout: New Vegas.

The prototype builds were discovered on some Xbox 360 dev kits in a store in Utah, and subsequently purchased by Games’ Past. The earliest build, dated April 17 2010, had been partially overwritten, and the latest build, dated August 22 2010, is apparently almost identical to the retail version of the game.

However, the July 21 2010 build is where things get interesting. This build is 2GB larger than the 4GB retail version of the game, and contains a treasure trove of cut content, including additional dialogue lines, cut locations and new (or otherwise altered) textures.

Games’ Past has already uploaded the entirety of these builds' contents online for technically-minded folks to sift through, and one new discovery is turning some heads.

As you can hear for yourself (not that I’d recommend it), one channel by the name of View Monst2 has uploaded a video containing cut dialogue from the game featuring… a romanceable Mr House.

I’m not sure if I should recommend that you listen to this with or without headphones, because doing so with will make the experience even more skin-crawling, but doing so without may lead to other people overhearing what you’re listening to.

Mr House details the “mementoes” of Hollywood stars, who he has, from what I understand, uploaded to his Securitrons by using their “anatomical and biometric data”. Good lord.

It, somehow, gets worse from there. It would seem that the Courier could have gifted Mr House data of themselves, which would then trigger dialogue that allowed you to romance him.

The last third of the dialogue is, um, potentially too raunchy in nature for me to detail here, so… yeah, you’ve been warned.

Man, I was hoping they’d uncover some cool cut weapons or alternative endings, not whatever the hell this is. The fact that Obsidian left this out but decided to keep in Fisto really tells you all you need to know.
