One of Fallout’s original creators, the legendary Tim Cain, has just announced that he’s returning to Fallout: New Vegas’ developer Obsidian Games on a “full-time” basis.
And, as if that wasn’t exciting enough, Cain has already started teasing the next project he’ll be working on.
If you know the name Tim Cain, you probably already know about his hand in creating the Fallout series.
Cain was there on day one back when Interplay was still alive and kicking, having worked on both Fallout, Fallout 2, and even the cancelled third Fallout game, codenamed Fallout: Van Buren.

According to a few different sources, Cain is even the guy who came up with the line “War… war never changes”. That’s a long-winded way of explaining that without Tim Cain, the Fallout we know and love today probably wouldn’t exist at all.
After a few years of working as a remote contractor, Cain has just announced that he's returning to Obsidian Entertainment permanently in a new video on his own personal YouTube channel (thank you to VGC for the source).

“I’m back at Obsidian… I’m there as a full-time employee and in-person, so not remote, and I’m not a contractor anymore. This means that I’m not working at other places, although there’s at least one game that I worked on [elsewhere] that I know is going to ship”, Cain revealed.
“I can’t talk about the project that I’m working on at Obsidian, just because that’s covered by NDA. Don’t bother guessing, you’re not going to guess right. I would probably say that I’m a lot less retired now.”
So, let’s ignore Tim for a second and immediately start guessing about what he’s working on.
The obvious answer is it’s something Fallout-related. Could that be Fallout 5? That long-rumoured Fallout 3 remaster? Or is it just the obvious one: a sequel to Fallout: New Vegas.
If we take Tim’s word at face value, the obvious answer sounds like it would be the least likely. To me, that rules out anything Fallout-shaped.
However, considering Tim Cain also helped with both The Outer Worlds and The Outer Worlds 2, I think it would be just as unlikely for his next project to be a new entry in that franchise.
So, if you want my best guess… it sounds like he’s working on a new IP to me. After all, we probably wouldn’t be able to guess what the project is if it isn’t some kind of sequel.
Or, y’know, this is all just a huge misdirect and he is actually working on a new Fallout game.
Well, we probably won’t know for sure for at least another couple of years either way. It would be hilarious to look back on this in 2027 if it ends up being something like Fallout: Van Buren.
