Bethesda has officially confirmed that Fallout 5 is on the way - just don’t expect it for a long, long while yet.
While it’s not a huge surprise to learn that Bethesda is working on a sequel to the massively successful Fallout 4, it was interesting to hear studio director Todd Howard shed a little light on where the project is at… and where exactly it lies in terms of the team’s current priorities.

Speaking to IGN for a fascinating Skyrim 10th anniversary retrospective, Howard revealed that Bethesda currently has a “one-pager” for Fallout 5. That’s effectively a very, very rough plan that outlines where it wants to take the series next.

Obviously the big takeaway there is that it’s still incredibly early days for the new Fallout, and it’ll probably be years before work on the project really kicks up a gear. That’s because Bethesda’s current focus is on Starfield, which releases next year. After that, it’s The Elder Scrolls VI, which was still in the design phase earlier this year. Fallout fans are in for a wait, basically.
Howard was pushed on the possibility of Bethesda once again handing over Fallout to a separate studio, as it did with the excellent New Vegas. He didn’t have much to say, suggesting only that "Fallout's really part of our DNA here".
"We've worked with other people from time to time, he added. "I can't say say what's gonna happen...If I could wave my hand and have [Fallout 5] out...you know, I'd like to find a way to accelerate what we do, but I can't really say today or commit to anything, what's going to happen when, other than our cadence is Starfield then Elder Scrolls 6".
