'Battlefield 2042' To Go Free-To-Play In Response To Disappointing Performance, Insider Says

The publisher is "looking at all the options" for the future of the game.

Apparently, Battlefield 2042 might become free to play following the catastrophes that the game has suffered since its launch in November of last year.

This tidbit arises from industry insider Tom Henderson who has been on target in the past with his claims about the game, like the futuristic world, natural disasters like tornadoes and snowstorms that affect the match over the course of the game, and the sheer extent of the destructible environments. Also, he says he's been in touch with sources close to the development of the next Grand Theft Auto game, asserting that the sixth entry, with its continually evolving setting, will be the only offering from Rockstar Games to hit this generation of hardware.

Here's a compilation of wins and fails from Battlefield 2042 to cheer up this chilly winter morning!

"EA is reportedly very disappointed with how Battlefield 2042 has performed and is 'looking at all the options' when it comes to the title, this is including looking at Free to Play in some capacity," claimed Henderson, promising more updates on this front in the near future. It's not out of the realm of possibility, really, seeing that Battlefield 2042 has floundered in recent months.

The scathing parody Clownfield 2042 has a higher user score on Steam than its inspiration, and players had pulled together a list of every single problem they had with the game on the community subreddit. It was about as long as your arm in the end, citing the lack of a campaign, limited number of modes, inability to customise loadouts ahead of the match, and the chattiness of the Operators. Even the people developing cheats for the game have stopped their services as there aren't enough customers and the cheats themselves aren't guaranteed to work given the glitchiness of the game.

Developer DICE is aware of the situation, however, and it's very plausible that these numerous issues with Battlefield 2042 were instigated by the unusually short development window for the live first-person shooter. "It’s taking us too long to get this resolved," said senior design director Justin Weibe in response to a player's complaints about the problems with progression in Portal specifically.
