Last Friday (17 March), it was announced that Lance Reddick, the American actor arguably best known for his roles in the The Wire and the John Wick series had died suddenly at the age of 60.

Although the actor took on a huge number of iconic TV and film roles during his career, he was also highly recognisable amongst the gaming community due to his roles in the Destiny franchise, as well as Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. In the latter, he played the mysterious wanderer Sylens, and in the Destiny series, he was the one and only Commander Zavala.

His impact on the Destiny franchise was absolutely huge - having originally appeared in the first game back in 2014, he’s been part of the series for almost a decade. Following the announcement of his death, Destiny developers Bungie posted a statement to Twitter.

“Lance Reddick was an iconic presence on screen, in Destiny, and most importantly, in person,” the statement reads. “His love for our community shined through in Commander Zavala, in his uncompromising dedication to his craft, and out of the radiating kindness that touched those around him. To say he will be missed is a profound understatement, yet no less true. Rest in peace, Lance.”

As VGC reports, Destiny fans have been celebrating Reddick’s life and contributions to the series in-game, with thousands gathering at The Tower where Commander Zavala can be found to pay their respects.

“Rest in peace Commander Zavala. Didn’t know how engraved your voice actor work was [in] me until now. It’s been close to 10 years of nonstop hours hearing your voice. It will never be the same without you… Will always appreciate you Lance Reddick, Commander Zavala,” @Pharaoh_Rising tweeted, with a screenshot of their character kneeling before Zavala.

Others have been doing the same: “This was at the tower, just after I had heard. He will be our commander, always,” @chlo_pls wrote, showing a whole group of players gathered around the commander.

Here at GAMINGbible, our thoughts go out to Reddick’s family and friends at this difficult time - may he rest in peace.
