Despite a rocky lifespan, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally getting the hype it deserves 3 years after it was first released. Thanks to a recent update that overhauled the base game as well as the arrival of the Phantom Liberty expansion, some fans believe it is now “one of the greatest games ever”.

First launched in 2020 in a broken and unplayable state, CD Projekt Red has had its work cut out making Cyberpunk 2077 the game it is today. Now 3 years and millions of dollars later, the game is being hailed as “one of gaming’s best open worlds” as well as outpacing The Witcher 3 in sales. This resurgence has been a direct result of the latest 2.0 Update as well as the game’s first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty, which launched last month.

With Cyberpunk 2077 recently hitting 25 million copies sold, fans have taken to r/cyberpunkgame to share their thoughts on the title. “I have to express how truly amazing this game is. Throughout my 25 years of life, I've had the pleasure of playing numerous games, and I must say that Cyberpunk 2077 now ranks among the finest, at least in my opinion”, said one poster. “It's right up there with the likes of Mass Effect (1-3), Red Dead Redemption 2, and God of War Ragnarök.”

“Even before the update, I was captivated by Cyberpunk 2077 due to its compelling story, well-crafted characters, and fun ass gameplay”, they continued. “However, with the recent update and the INCREDIBLE Phantom Liberty DLC, I can confidently declare that this game has ascended to legendary status. The new update has fixed so much that was initially wrong with the game and I believe that with the update, the game is now truly what CDPR had intended it to be. I genuinely believe that in the future, many will look back at Cyberpunk and share the same sentiment, that it is one of the greatest games of all time.”

It seems as though this poster is not the only one to think Cyberpunk 2077 is now one of the best video games in recent years. Although it took some time to reach this “legendary” status, it is testament to CD Projekt Red’s dedication. Now with news of an upcoming sequel and a possible live-action adaptation, the future is definitely bright for Cyberpunk 2077.
