Crimson Desert is seeing a new wave of review bombs following a recent patch, with players accusing Pearl Abyss of “censorship” of the game’s content.
Crimson Desert has been one of this year’s most popular RPGs, earning generally favourable reviews from critics and selling five million copies within the first month of release.
In a case of proving that it probably needed a little more time in the oven, Pearl Abyss raced out patch after patch in the weeks following launch, updating the game with pretty much anything from small tweaks and bug fixes, to massive changes and overhauls.
Crimson Desert’s latest patch has rolled out this week, and it might have been one of the game’s biggest updates yet.

The new patch features new endgame combat features, as well as the ability to register certain animals as special mounts.
However, players have also begun review-bombing the game, accusing the game of “censorship” following the latest update.
Although the game is still rated as “Very Positive” on Steam, many negative reviews added today have mentioned “censorship” as the reason for users leaving a “Not Recommended” rating.
“Really?? Censoring the game now??” reads one negative review.
“Why have you started censoring outfits after taking our money?” reads another. “You hit your sales targets and now you stoop to this disgusting behavior? This bait-and-switch will remain a stain on your company and a warning to all potential customers.”

So, what’s all the fuss actually about? The outrage seems to stem from one screenshot being shared online showing a change to Damiane’s outfit, adding thick black shorts under her red leather armour and short skirt.
The actual change is pretty miniscule. In fact, you wouldn’t even really notice it unless you really went looking for it. Even looking at the image being shared online, I can’t really see much of a difference.
Here's a tweet showing what the changes to Damiane's outfit are.
Members of the community who might be a little too terminally online have started to review bomb the game for it though, all for Pearl Abyss’ crime of slightly adjusting a character’s outfit in a very insignificant way.
Many are also claiming to boycott the game, and any further releases by Pearl Abyss.
However, the review bomb campaign has seemingly not affected the game’s overall reception as of yet.
At the moment, Crimson Desert has 86% positive overall reviews and 84% positive recent reviews on Steam, so the controversy has not had a massive effect on the overall rating. Sentiment is still classed as “Very Positive” overall.
Many players also continue to add positive reviews each day. 111 positive reviews have been added today, while 78 have been negative.
