Total ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Sales In 2021 Are A Fraction Of Its Launch

The co-CEO said that the team will be able to "successfully sell it for years to come."

Problematically, it looks like Cyberpunk 2077 will not hit its expected first year sales forecast, with an estimated 4.2 million copies sold throughout the entirety of 2021.

Compare that with the stratospherically successful performance of the game in its launch month and you see why analysts are raising their eyebrows. CD Projekt Red proudly stated that the RPG sold 13.7 million copies in three weeks in December of last year and the project recouped its costs in one day. It was a glimmer of light in the scary stormy clouds that shrouded Cyberpunk 2077 as the studio approached its launch date, which had been pushed back once, twice, three times, four times in total.

Unfortunately, that glimmer was gone in a blink of an eye. The game was burdened with bugs and glitches that ranged from the ridiculous to the rage-inducing and requests from refunds flooded the studio’s customer service team. Sony and Microsoft found themselves in the hot seat, somehow, with Sony removing the game from the PlayStation Store outright and Microsoft revising its refund policies to accommodate the shambolic events.

Understandably, CD Projekt Red has been vague about the actual numbers underpinning Cyberpunk 2077’s performance in its first year. It’s possible that we haven’t heard anything concrete because it’s nearing a nice, round milestone that will look good on its socials. However, Polish outlet Bankier.pl has found that fiscal analysts aren’t too optimistic about the game’s momentum out of December 2020.

They reckon the RPG will sell about four million copies over the course of this year — we’ve still got two months left til we can say sayonara to 2021. That’s not a patch on its launch month sales, and this figure increases the total sales of Cyberpunk 2077 to approximately 18 million copies.

Estimates worked out its first year sales should see 30 million copies out in the world. So, it’s only made it to 60% of its goal. "I don't see an option to shelve Cyberpunk 2077," said co-CEO Adam Kicinski in an interview. "We are convinced that we can bring the game to such a state that we can be proud of it and therefore successfully sell it for years to come." Slow and steady wins the race, eh?
