At Opening Night Live, Borderlands 4 was finally announced and it’s coming in 2025.

That’s not too long to wait, and it’s not much of a surprise that the announcement has come so soon after the release of the film - perhaps Gearbox wanted to clear the taste out of everyone’s mouths.

We didn’t get to see much at all. A meteorite seemed to crash on an unknown planet, wreathed in flames.

After it crashed, we saw a robotic arm reach out tentatively as dirt trickled off the object left in the crater.

Slowly spinning it around, it’s revealed to be a ‘Psycho’ mask, known as one of the grunts of the Borderlands.

Whether this is a continuation of a story, it is hard to tell at this point. It's likely going to be a standalone title within the universe.

It was interesting to see the Psycho's arm was very futuristic, which could be pointing at a more far-flung future and sci-fi setting.

While the games have traditionally had more of a Western feel, with dry deserts and open areas, could we be seeing a city setting?

Hopefully we'll find out much more over the coming months as 2025 isn't all that far away (heaven help us).

The Borderlands franchise has been incredibly popular ever since the first game in 2009, with several spin-offs.

Given the usual nods and homages we see across the previous games, it wouldn't be a surprise to see old characters make appearances in one way or another.

All we know for certain is that fans will be very excited to get shooting, looting, and vault hunting next year.

But will the mighty Borderlands go up against GTA VI? Or will Gearbox do their best to deliver the open-world action in the summer? Only time will tell.
