Bloodborne Meets Call of Duty, of All Things, In New FPS

Weird combination but it sort of works

Bloodborne and Call Of Duty aren’t two IPs you’d expect to work well together, but this upcoming Steam game somehow makes it work.

As a soulslike fan I’m obviously enamoured by Bloodborne, and am one of the many people campaigning for a PlayStation 5 remaster as well as an official PC release. It baffles me that Sony hasn’t done this sooner given how many of its PlayStation 4 games have been re-released with director’s cuts and remakes.

While I’m not a big fan of Call Of Duty, I’m intrigued by Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 as the trailer looked wild. I was invested as soon as I saw giant machetes raining down from the sky. I love that it’s taking a more psychological approach to its story and I’m eager to see more.

Combining both the eldritch terrors of Bloodborne and the gameplay of Call Of Duty comes Beneath, a shooter coming to Steam very soon.

Beneath is described as a “Lovecraft-inspired survival FPS. Scarce ammo, merciless enemies and a sense of the unknown combine in a 10+ hour, story-driven single player campaign, built for both veteran gamers and those seeking a challenging old school experience.”

At a glance it looks quite good. The in-game screenshots and the gameplay trailer found on its Steam page both do a good job of conveying the horror you’ll encounter, even when you’ve got weapons to defend yourself with.

It looks a little rough around the edges at times but that’s nothing to criticise, after all this game doesn’t have the luxury of having hundreds of developers like the latest Call Of Duty will have.

I’m particularly intrigued by the promise of a “challenging old school experience.” That phrasing makes me think of the Doom games which sounds great, but in my experience a greater degree of challenge can quickly become tedious. Just look at the reactions to Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Nevertheless the game looks solid so far, though it unfortunately doesn’t have a release date. The Steam page says it’ll come out this year but that could mean in the next few weeks or the next few months, which isn’t a lot to go off.

If you simply can’t wait to try it though you’ll be glad to hear a free demo is available right now. If it works on Steam Deck I’ll be giving it a go myself.
