Batman fans are surprised with a new Arkham game that’s been dubbed an unexpected triumph.

Developer Rocksteady Studios was made famous by the critically acclaimed Batman Arkham series, setting a new standard of what is expected of a superhero video game. Though the less said about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the better, in my opinion.

However, when another new game set in the Arkhamverse was announced earlier in the year with Batman: Arkham Shadow, DC fans were initially buzzing with excitement. Then it was revealed Rocksteady Studios had no direct involvement and it would be a VR game only, quickly nerfing that excitement.

Developed by Camouflaj and exclusive to the Meta Quest 3, in Batman: Arkham Shadow, “it’s the Fourth of July, and Gotham City is under attack by a new threat: the mysterious Rat King and his cultish devotees. As widespread rioting engulfs the city, Batman races to prevent this so-called 'Day of Wrath' before it all goes wrong.”

I think it’s fair to say that while many hoped that Batman: Arkham Shadow would at least be a half-decent game, to say that it’s more than exceeded expectations is a pleasant surprise.

UploadVR said that Batman: Arkham Shadow is a “triumphant return for the Caped Crusader”, with Metro adding that it’s “one of the best VR experiences ever made”.

Gamers on Reddit have also expressed their delight with the Dark Knight VR simulator.

“I got to play it for an hour before getting ready for bed....it's really good. It’s surprising how much they translated from Arkham without making me feel sick,” Kjagz33 explained. “I might have to take a day off work tomorrow for this game.”

“I just played for a couple of hours, it was hard to stop but I have stuff to do. The combat is so satisfying,” said uacoop.

“It's great. It had me doing a Christian Bale voice every time I grabbed someone from a gargoyle,” Exciting_Analysis_11 replied.

Batman: Arkham Shadow is out now.
