First announced back in July, fans of the long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise can look forward to a live-action series developed under Netflix’s agreement with Ubisoft which has been in effect since 2020.
Now in an exclusive with Variety, the director for Assassin’s Creed has been revealed and with an impressive run under his belt, our hopes are starting to be raised.
Since the Assassin’s Creed show was first announced earlier this year, we have been steadily learning about some of the actors who will be taking on the iconic roles.
This includes Toby Wallace and Lola Petticrew who are best known for Euphoria and Say Nothing taking on lead roles as well as Laura Marcus (Death by Lightning) and Zachary Hart (Slow Horses) joining as series regulars.

Now on top of the stacked cast, a director has finally been revealed.
According to a report by Variety, Swedish director Johan Renck will be taking the helm for Assassin’s Creed.

Best known for directing Emmy Award-winning mini-series Chernobyl, Renck also worked on some episodes of Breaking Bad as well as The Walking Dead and Vikings.
Although plot details for Assassin’s Creed are currently being kept under wraps, including which of Ubisoft’s many entries will be given the live-action first, a brief synopsis has been revealed.
“Centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will.
The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”
Could Ancient Rome Be Our Setting?
However, according to a recent story by Eurogamer, the Assassin’s Creed live-action television show will be taking us to ancient Rome at the height of its power during 50-70AD.
It will reportedly feature historical figures such as Emperor Nero and Seneca the Younger which gives us some insight into its potential setting.
If this is true, it seems as though the television show will be roughly based on Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise as, despite heading to ancient Greece in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and meeting some notable Roman figures, we have yet to see the city at its peak in the video game series.
Although this would mean that we get to experience some original stories, it could also mean that we do not get to see some of our favourite assassins such as Ezio or Edward Kenway.
However, this all remains to be seen but with a director now at the helm, I am sure it will not be long until we finally receive those all-important details.
