Assassin's Creed Shadows is already being blasted as 'woke'

Not everyone is happy about Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Most Assassin’s Creed fans are hyped for the next entry in the popular Ubisoft series months away from the release of the highly anticipated Shadows but it seems that not everyone is happy.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was revealed yesterday with an epic cinematic trailer confirming previous rumours that it will have two playable protagonists, Naoe a female shinobi and Yasuke, a male samurai, the latter of which is believed to be the first black samurai. Set in feudal Japan, Assassin’s Creed Shadows also looks like it might be one of the bloodiest games in the series, judging by its debut trailer.

Check out the Assassin’s Creed Shadows trailer below!

While we’re yet to see gameplay for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it looks to be following in the footsteps of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate by offering two simultaneous characters to play in the same campaign, unlike Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Valhalla, which offered one or the other.

Yet it seems that fans of the Assassin’s Creed series are suggesting that the upcoming game (and I hate this word), is ‘woke’. It won't take long to find comments making that assumption whether it’s a tweet from Ubisoft or the trailer uploaded to YouTube. Moreover, the Like and Dislike ratio on YouTube may also be telling with 197k Likes and 228k Dislikes at the time of writing.

It seems that any excuse nowadays is used to throw the word “woke” about, whether it’s justified or not. Hopefully, by the time Assassin’s Creed Shadows is released later this year, it will knock it out of the park and it will tell a fun story of what appears to be two interesting characters in a setting that fans have wanted for years.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on 15 November 2024 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
