When the first Animal Crossing dropped over two decades ago, it really did manage to capture lightning in a bottle, by being one of the first games that actively sought to tap into people's desire for relaxing and chilled out video game experiences.
Whilst these are obviously much more common now, the idea of a "cosy game" had occurred to very few developers, and Nintendo have since built on that success significantly, with New Horizons remaining the most recent example from the main series.
That doesn't mean there isn't room for other contenders to enter the fray, and if you're looking to build an adorable little virtual life somewhere, then an upcoming game could have everything you want.
Developed by XD Inc, Heartopia is set to release in 2026 for PC and mobile devices, and it has all of the ingredients fans of the genre would expect to see. The premise sees our character follow a mysterious "Star Spirit" that leads players to a blissful island where they take on the role of town developer.

The emphasis here really is on relaxation and playing the way you wish, though the game does provide plenty of activities to get on with (if you feel like it). Heartopia features six core hobbies/pursuits - Fishing, Gardening, Cat Care, Bug Catching, Birdwatching, and Cooking - all of which helps you fill out your personal encyclopedia to earn new rewards.
The game just got a new trailer stylised as a vlog of a day in the life of the player character. It features them visiting several shops, interacting with NPCs and decorating their home with some of the game's extensive options in that area. It's also possible to customise your character with new appearances and outfits unlocked by playing the game.
The graphics are also quite impressive, and it will be interesting to see if mid-range mobile devices are able to keep up with the demands of a game that has also been designed for PC.
Heartopia is also set to feature at the Tokyo Games Show, if you're heading over there for any reason, with a hands-on demo available for those who do make it to the show floor. They are also running special events in conjunction with the game, including a cosplay contest and a plushie raffle.

No confirmed release date for Heartopia just yet, outside of 2026, but the latest trailer would suggest we won't have to wait too long once next year rolls around.
