WWE 2K25 Interview With Attitude Era Legend Road Dogg

Oh, you didn't know?

This week, the ‘Attitude Era Superstars Pack’ releases for WWE 2K25, and it includes D’Lo Brown, Mark Henry, Victoria, Billy Gunn and Road Dogg Jessie James.

To celebrate the launch of the highly anticipated WWE 2K25 DLC, I spoke with the one and only Road Dogg about his career and what it’s like to be brought to life in digital form for a new generation of fans to enjoy.

Former United States Marine Corps, real name Brian Girard James, began his career in professional wrestling in 1986, but when he made his debut in the WWE in 1994, with fellow WWE Hall of Famer “Double J” Jeff Jarrett, Brian would embark on a career that few in the industry could rival.

Brian, a former multiple Intercontinental, Hardcore, and Tag Team champion, not to mention a Hall of Famer inducted as part of the legendary D-Generation X faction (which includes Billy Gunn), has had an amazing career both inside and outside of the proverbial squared circle.

Today, after having countless career-defining matches and moments, Brian is a respected writer behind the scenes; he not only helps bring stories on the screen to life but also helps the WWE talent flourish.

“As I’ve gotten older, I’m able to process things differently. I recently rewatched my match with Chyna at the King of the Ring PPV in 1999, and that was a special moment,” Brian says with a big smile.

Chyna, a fellow WWE Hall of Famer, was a pivotal member of D-Generation X and was not only the first woman in WWE to compete in the King of the Ring tournament against men, but also the Royal Rumble and to hold the Intercontinental Championship. So to say that she’s an icon would be an understatement. Sadly, Chyna lost her life in April 2016.

Brian also mentioned his hardcore match with the Big Boss Man (who passed away in 2004) at Royal Rumble 1999 and his hardcore matches with Al Snow as career highlights. “Hardcore matches were the most rewarding, but they hurt,” he recalls.

However, despite having an incredible in-ring career, it’s being able to write memorable stories that gives Brian the most satisfaction of all, namely “Kofi Mania”, a story that would see beloved WWE Superstar Kofi Kingston defeat Daniel Bryan to win the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 35 in April 2019.

“I’ve got goosebumps just telling you about that. I don't get goosebumps talking about any of my matches, even against Chyna. Being able to help create those kinds of moments, that’s what I love and is the most fun,” says Brian. “That moment means so much to me, especially as I have a great relationship with Kofi.”

Having the likes of Road Dogg and Billy Gunn, collectively known as the New Age Outlaws in WWE 2K25, is a huge moment for Brian, and he can’t believe how accurately he’s been recreated in the ‘Attitude Era Superstars Pack’.

“I watched our New Age Outlaws entrance in WWE 2K25, and it blew me away. The developers at Visual Concepts even gave me big biceps and shoulders, I look like a proper man,” Brian jokes. “They also got our facials and vocals down to a pat. It’s incredible. I can’t wait for my children and grandchildren to see this.”

One of the most popular modes in the WWE 2K series is its ‘Showcase’ campaign. This is a campaign that can be dedicated to any era and any superstar, highlighting some of the greatest matches and moments ever, as well as those dream matches that never came to be.

“If I were to pick a couple of my favourite matches, I’d have to say the ‘Dumpster Match’ that Billy Gun and I had with Mick Foley and the late, great Terry Funk on Monday Night Raw in February 1999. Terry was probably the toughest man I’ve ever been in the ring with,” explains Brian.

“Then I’d say my hardcore ‘Falls Count Anywhere’ match with Al Snow on Monday Night Raw in January 1999. I befittingly piledrived Al outside on the snow. That match was so cool.”

Fun fact, that January episode of Raw is credited for being the one when WWE began to win the “Monday Night War” against rival promotion WCW, after its commentators sarcastically spoiled the Raw episode, suggesting fans watching live to change the channel to the pre-recorded episode featuring Mankind (Mick Foley) win the WWE Championship. What were they thinking?

“As far as dream matches go, being an old-school tag team purest, I would have loved me and Billy from 1998 to have matches with the Midnight Express and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express. Maybe Tully Blanchard and Arne Anderson, The Brain Busters, as a close third. We got to work with the Road Warriors (aka The Legion of Doom), so that was fun to work with them,” he continues.

Another fun mode in WWE 2K25 is ‘MyFACTION’, where you’re able to create your dream squad to compete against the CPU and other players across the world to earn exclusive DLC rewards.

In the spirit of ‘MyFACTION’, I asked Brian if he could build a D-Generation X faction for the new generation, with him at the helm, who would be in his team.

“I’d have to pick Rhea Ripley for sure, and Damian Priest. Damian reminds me a lot of a younger Undertaker. I might have to take Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford, the Street Prophets, too. I could also have JD McDonagh; he could be my new X-Pac. Do you know what, I’ll just take the entire Judgment Day group while I’m at it.”

Living such an eventful life, Brian concluded our conversation by letting me know what has recently given him the most joy in life.

“We’re got empty nesters right now because our youngest daughter just went away to university, so especially, our two French Bulldogs give us so much joy. I just became a cat dad too, and I never thought I’d have a cat in my life. My wife and I have our 30th anniversary coming up, so we got a cat to celebrate.

“Watching our dogs and cat try to get along has been so much fun. Sometimes, when our cat puts the Frenchies in their place, we have a wooden floor, and when they try to run away, they skid on the spot and go nowhere. It’s like watching a cartoon,” he laughs.

The ‘Attitude Era Superstars Pack’ is released on Wednesday, 17 September 2025. It’s included in the WWE 2K25 season pass and can be purchased separately.
