‘Far Cry 6’ Preview: Why Dani Is The Champion Of A Very Different Far Cry

‘Far Cry 6’ Preview: Why Dani Is The Champion Of A Very Different Far Cry

The series is known for its villains, so this is a major step for Far Cry.

Far Cry 6 steps away from the standard for the series in the introduction of a hero who has their own story and their own personality that affects how the struggle for the fictional island's freedom plays out. While Far Cry has had some memorable characters over the years, a lot of them are the baddies - I mean, Far Cry 6 is literally getting a DLC all about the villains.

So, we got to know our hero Dani Rojas in a recent preview event with Ubisoft to learn why this type of protagonist is so central to the heart of the game's themes and grounded realities.

Check out some explosive gameplay of the upcoming entry to the shooter series below!

The characterisation of Dani Rojas is a first for fans who are used to a character who's a clean slate - someone that they can project themselves onto. Now, in Far Cry 6, you'll see Dani (who is either a man or a woman) interact with Yarans who are desperate to see their country unshackled from Castillo's cruel rule, though they all have different ideas on how to get there.

Played by Sean Rey and Nisa Gunduz respectively, it's clear that the two invested a lot of themselves into the relatability of our hero. "I've always been an underdog in my life, I guess, because I do have a stutter," said Rey and added that this has been a challenge in his career that changed the way he understood Dani's situation. "He's conflicted - he wants to leave, but then he sees what's happening in his country and it takes a little bit of a push for him to stay and do the right thing."

"It was a journey," said Gunduz of her time working on Far Cry 6 during the pandemic. "I grew with a character over the span of two and a half years. I grew as a person, and I also grew as an actor. And Dani also grew through her journey too. So I think that it was just kind of like a stepping stone in getting where I wanted Dani to be."

Structurally speaking, narrative director Navid Khavari said that it's crucial that the representation of a revolution is not an empty shell. "Having a silent protagonist wasn't really going to happen for us to tell the story effectively," explained Khavari, mentioning the interrelationships that Dani will have with the different factions and their shared goal.

However, some might be disappointed to hear that there is no canonical Dani, even though the woman version of the character featured frequently in gameplay and trailers in the preview event. "You should choose the hero that you want to go on this journey with, but you shouldn't have to compromise on the story that you get as a result," answered audio and narrative producer Nicola Jones.

While Dani's personality and portrayal is a vehicle for the exemplification of the burgeoning revolution on Yara, it's also something that connects the hero and the villain together. "One of the interesting things for me is seeing Diego and Dani together on the boat, they actually start from the same point," said Jones, referring to the scene where Castillo's young son has infiltrated a group of fleeing Yarans for his father to discover. "They just think, 'I want to get the hell out of here.' And that relationship between them is one of those things that you couldn't get if you didn't have a speaking character who has something to say and has something to go through."

Far Cry 6 comes to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on October 7th.
