Uncharted is 'done' at Naughty Dog, and The Last Of Us Part 3 might not happen at all

he Uncharted series is “done” at Naughty Dog, and The Last of Us: Part 3 might not happen at all. However, is it as bad as it seems?

It’s been nearly six years since we had a new entry in the Indiana Jones-inspired series from Naughty Dog. The last entry was Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, the expansion-turned-standalone follow-up to the critically acclaimed Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

So it’s fair to say that fans of the Uncharted series have been longing for a new instalment. We did get the Legacy of Thieves Collection in 2022 which included remasters of Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy, but that doest really count.

Sadly, however, it seems that fans of the Uncharted series might have to wait a lot longer or worse still, wait for a game that may never arrive. At least that’s what we're led to believe after Naughty Dog chief, Neil Druckmann had a chat with BuzzFeed.

“For us, Uncharted was insanely successful,” said Druckmann. “Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games, and we're able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we're done. We're moving on.”

However, when discussing The Last of Us, this series had a more positive outlook. “It's up to us whether we want to continue [TLOU] or not,” added the Naughty Dog president.

He continued: “Our process is the same thing we did when we did Part 2, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love--just like the first and second game did--then we will tell that story.

“If we can't come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.”

As much as we’d love to see a continuation of The Last of Us, I believe the future might not be as dire for Uncharted fans as we’re led to believe. Naughty Dog may be done with Uncharted. However, that doesn't mean that Sony is done with the series.

In 2011, Days Gone developer Bend Studio released the criminally underrated Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the PS Vita. This was then followed up by a card spin-off title, Fortune Hunter.

So, even if Naughty Dog doesn't develop a new Uncharted game, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that the series will be outsourced to another studio. We can only hope. That being said, Uncharted fans believe that a new game in the series may have been teased, courtesy of a recent PlayStation advert.
