It has been announced that The Last of Us season three is quite a long way away from airing; additionally, a recent report reveals that it may also be the end for the much-loved television series.

Inspired by the award-winning video game series of the same name, HBO’s The Last of Us became an instant hit when it first aired back in 2023.

Since then, it has welcomed its second season but unfortunately, that season did not perform as well as the first and was met with mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.

On top of that, Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann also revealed that he would be stepping down from working on the television show in order to pay more attention to the studio’s upcoming IP Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

With Druckmann no longer involved and with season three having a lot of weight on its shoulders thanks to the divisive second season, the future is looking uncertain for The Last of Us.

Unfortunately, the bad news does not end there.

According to a recent interview with HBO boss Casey Bloys, The Last of Us season three will not air until 2027.

Not only that but the third season could very well be our last.

"The series is definitely planned for 2027," Bloys told Variety.

"Craig [Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season," he continued. "It hasn't been decided yet, and I'm following Craig's lead on that."

The Last of Us season three is already dividing fans following the news that Kaitlyn Dever would be leading the charge as Abby thanks to Pedro Pascal now being out of the equation and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie taking more of a back seat.

However, Bloys does not think that this will affect the show’s popularity going forward.

"Not from a marketing perspective," Bloys replied, "because I think the title is obviously helped by the video game, and now the first two seasons is pretty well established. I kind of appreciate shows that take things and do a show from a different point of view."

In the interview, Bloys was careful to avoid answering any questions about when The Last of Us will end but perhaps the creators are waiting to see how its third season will be received.

Until now, we will have to wait until 2027 to see what is next for Abby in HBO’s The Last of Us, so let us hope that the long wait is worth it.
