Star Wars fans torn over original plan for Sequel trilogy

Could it have been worse?

Star Wars fans are torn over what seems to be the initial plans for a sequel trilogy from George Lucas.

Despite the huge amount of love for the Star Wars franchise since its inception in 1977, fans have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with the galaxy far, far away.

For every Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, there’s a Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, and for every Andor, there’s an Obi-Wan Kenobi. Still, I feel for the most part, the good most certainly outweighs the bad for this beloved franchise.

When Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens was released in 2015, there was a lot of hype surrounding the movie. After all, it had been 10 long years since the release of its previous movie, Episode III - The Revenge of the Sith.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens did not disappoint in my opinion. Then we had Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, followed by the aforementioned The Rise of Skywalker, ending the sequel trilogy on a major low point.

Star Wars: Episode I through to Episode VI were written by the franchise creator, George Lucas. However, the sequel trilogy was not, with the duties being shared by a number of names.

George Lucas not being the writer of the sequel trilogy has led many Star Wars fans to think “What if?” Would we have gotten better movies if he were at the helm? That's a conversation discussed by fans on Reddit.

“People would’ve hated Lucas’ sequels too,” claimed BagofBabbish. “I’ve noticed it has become common to hear fans lament that we did not get Lucas’ sequel trilogy.”

“While the Disney trilogy greatly disappointed, I am quite confident there would have been a different, but equally strong blowback to his planned trilogy.”

In a list of bullet points detailing what was reportedly planned for the sequel trilogy, Luke Skywalker was still going to be depressed and go into hiding. What’s more, George Lucas is said to have been pleased with The Last Jedi.

Darth Maul would return with Darth Tallon (which sounds awesome), and Anakin Skywalker would have been confirmed not to be the chosen one; instead, it would have been Princess Leia (which I’m not totally against if done right).

“The problem with the sequels was not enough George Lucas. The problem with the prequels was too much George Lucas,” replied Alpha_blue5. “The original trilogy, on the other hand, had just the right amount of George Lucas.”

“You can see toward the end when Lucas got dollar signs in his eyes and we got Ewoks, one of the favourite things for fans to hate on,” said Dinierto. “I never considered that they were there to sell merchandise as a kid, but as an adult, things took on a different light.”

“It’s hard to generalise, because I think that Lucas’s ideas for the sequels in the early 1980s and Lucas’s ideas for the sequels in the early 2010s looked very different,” explained RedHeadedSicilian52.

“Contrary to what he’s publicly maintained at various points, he’s never fully closed the book on plans for such movies, which is why Expanded Universe writers were forbidden from killing certain characters,” they concluded.

I guess we’ll never truly know whether the sequel trilogy would have been better or worse with a fully invested George Lucas. We can only speculate.
