The Marvel multiverse has treated us to some very dark realities for our heroes, with one of the most twisted being the Marvel Ultimate universe.

For those who aren’t aware the Marvel Ultimates universe is a mature take on heroes like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron-Man etc, and while Spider-Man didn’t do too badly in this reality the rest of heroes were a far cry from their normal selves.

Recently it was revealed what happened to the Fantastic Four in this reality, and it’s pretty grim.

During the events of The Ultimates #4 their origin remained pretty much the same, they hopped in their rocket, blasted off into space where they’d usually be hit with a cosmic storm to gain their powers.

This didn’t happen though, as a villain known as the Maker messed up the flight calculations, so they missed the cosmic storm and were instead set on fire in their cockpit.

Johnny Storm aka the Human Torchdied in the fire ironically, with the rest of the team landing back on the ground.

Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, committed suicide due to survivor’s guilt whereas Sue Storm, Invisible Woman, was doomed to die of radiation poisoning.

The only one who sort of walked away unscathed was Reed Richards, but he was unfortunately captured by the Maker and brainwashed into believing he’s Doctor Doom.

It’s a very messed up story, and while it’s going on the real Doctor Doom is trying various experiments to create the superpowers the team were supposed to get from the cosmic radiation.

Honestly the darkness of the Ultimate universe has never appealed to me, nor does it really appeal to other fans either.

With Marvel’s first family coming to the MCU in Fantastic Four: First Steps, let’s hope their origin story is a bit more successful.
