Lord of the Rings fans divided over Sauron's horrifying real appearance

Lord of the Rings fans divided over Sauron's horrifying real appearance

One villain to divide them all

Sauron has always had an air of mystery about him; a dark, enigmatic entity that has persistently threatened the welfare of the characters in The Lord of the Rings.

Ever since The Rings of Power though, the mysticism surrounding the Dark Lord has lessened. Or at least, that’s how some fans feel.

Have you been enjoying The Rings of Power?

During one of the recent episodes, an “in between” form for Sauron was revealed, one which, while unsettling to look at, has divided the fandom.

This “black goo form” has been dubbed as “unnecessary” by some TV viewers, leaving them to question why it was included.

“Personally felt this wasn't necessary and could have been depicted as more magical in means. This seems very physical tied [...] To me it somehow lessened the process,” put forward SnooSuggestions9830 on Reddit.

The OP isn’t alone in their feelings – another Redditor said that they were “mixed” on its inclusion, adding, “[I] thought what they did looked cool, though I’m not sure it felt completely right for the character.”

Other Lord of the Rings fans challenged this argument though, saying, “I actually liked the black goo form. I liked the way it pooled down through the cracks, ate a rat to gain strength, and flopped its way to the surface. I don't think something more ‘mystical’ would have been as enjoyable.”

User A_Balrog_Is_Come seconded this by adding, “I liked it. It’s established that it takes Sauron time to take a new form after one is destroyed. But we don’t know why or how which left a gap to be filled. This seems like a reasonable and tonally faithful filling of that gap for a dark spirit.”

The indecision of the fans feels quite fitting given how “hit and miss” the Amazon series has been this season.

Despite its problems, GAMINGbible’s Dan Lipscombe still believes it a “more than entertaining” experience.

We can’t wait to see what other debates the series sparks when it makes its next big reveal.
