The Rogues Gallery is packed to the rafters with fiendish foes, but it’s The Joker who I’d argue is the most infamous of the bunch.

He’s a character who has appeared in plenty of Batman adaptations over the years, having been brought to life by Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Hamill to name just a few examples.

The Clown Prince of Crime will soon surface again, as a new iteration is set to debut in a brand new film this year.

That’s right. The upcoming Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires will see Batman and The Joker come face-to-face once more, and HBO Max has dropped a first look.

Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, if you’re unaware, is an upcoming Mexican-American adult animated film.

Written by Ernie Altbacker, whose credits include Ben 10, Spider-Man, and Static Shock, it’ll see Horacio García Rojas take on the role of Batman (Yohualli Coatl) and Omar Chaparro star as Joker (Yoka).

As is the case in most Batman tales, the story begins with the murdering of Yohualli’s father, except this time it’s at the hands of Spanish conquistadors.

Years later, Yohualli is working as a priest in the court of King Moctezuma II where alongside his faith work, he embodies his alter ego of the Batman in order to help protect citizens from the Spanish invaders.

How does The Joker factor into this, I hear you ask?

Well, Yoka was a priest too - and a respected one at that. That was until he heard the voice of Aztec god Huitzilopochtli telling him to engage in human sacrifice.

With the first trailer for the film having been dropped, we’ve now received a decent look at what The Joker, or Yoka, will look like, and he’s pretty much pure nightmare fuel.

You can take a look below.

The film is also due to feature actor Álvaro Morte as Hernán Cortés, or Two-Face, who just happens to be one of those invading conquistadors and thus a key protagonist.

Honestly, this adaptation sounds fantastic and it won’t be long until we get to watch it.

Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is set to release in cinemas in Mexico from 18 September 2025.

Around the rest of the world, it’ll debut on HBO Max on 19 September; get the date in your calendar.
