It looks like 1996's 'Tomb Raider' might be getting the Unreal Engine 5 remake treatment.

Just a few days ago, it was revealed at Epic’s State Of Unreal event that a new Tomb Raider game was in the works, from developer Crystal Dynamics using the Unreal Engine 5. Crystal Dynamics is the brainchild behind many of Lara Croft’s PlayStation 2 era outings, as well as the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and its subsequent sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Interestingly, the studio was not behind Lara’s most recent outing - Shadow of the Tomb Raider - with control instead handed over to Canada’s Eidos-Montréal. Whilst I continue to be the only member of the ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the best game in the reboot trilogy’ fan club, the news that control is being reverted back to Crystal Dynamics is likely to be a huge win for most fans. What we don’t yet know is what the new Tomb Raider game might look like … until now.

Take a look at this Tomb Raider 2 fan-made remake made in Unreal Engine 5.

The reboot trilogy served as Lara’s origin story with subsequent games expected to see Lara Croft return to full-form, but her next outing could be even more familiar than anticipated. As suggested by Reddit user Stock_Presentation_9, it seems that Crystal Dynamics could be working on an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original Tomb Raider, released in 1996 and following Lara’s attempts to find the Scion of Atlantis.

Stock_Presentation_9 points out that hours after the announcement, the official Tomb Raider Twitter account updated their cover photo and unveiled a brand new logo for the game which is very reminiscent of the logo of 1996’s Tomb Raider. Last year, Tomb Raider turned 25 so in the age of remakes that we live in, this one doesn’t seem out of the question. Perhaps one day, we might even get to lock the butler in the freezer once again. Ah, good times.
