The Witcher showrunner promises season 3 is closer to the books

The showrunner has teased that The Witcher's third season is the closest that the show has been to a "one-to-one adaptation" of the books.

Whether you like it or not, season three of The Witcher is set to be Henry Cavill’s last hurrah as Geralt - a change which I’m not sure that anyone is happy about apart from Liam Hemsworth.

Cavill announced last year that he’d be stepping down from the starring role from season four onwards, and despite thousands of fans petitioning to try and make him stay, it seems very unlikely at this point that that’s going to happen. It’s not all bad though - as well as promising a “heroic sendoff” for Cavill, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Entertainment Weekly that the actor’s third and final season of The Witcher will be much closer to the source material than ever before.

Before we get into it, take a look at the trailer for The Witcher: Blood Origin, which is now streaming on Netflix.

Not everyone has been a fan of the Netflix show’s deviation from the Witcher books - some have speculated that creative differences may have influenced Cavill’s decision to step down. However, it sounds like the upcoming season will be a treat for dedicated fans.

“What is so interesting is that season three, to me, is the closest thing that we've done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books,” Hissrich said. “Obviously, we can't do every page, but Time of Contempt gave us so many big action events, plot points, defining character moments, huge reveals of a big bad. There's so much to do that we were able to stick really, really closely with the books.”

Unfortunately though, beyond the goal of giving Cavill a good sendoff, there are currently no plans to keep the guy in the show in an alternative role or even behind the scenes - Hissrich admitted that the team “haven't even thought about that at this point”. It’ll definitely be the end of an era, but hopefully it’ll go out on a high.
