The Super Mario Bros. Movie had the biggest opening ever for an animated film

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a hit, and has surpassed worldwide box office records to have the best ever opening for an animated film.

It’s official - The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a hit. Illumination’s take on Nintendo's beloved franchise had the best ever worldwide opening for an animated film, and you really can’t get any better than that.

Although some initial critic reviews for The Super Mario Bros. Movie weren’t exactly brimming with praise, fans’ reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly positive. At the time of writing, it has a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which speaks for itself.

Take a look at our chat with Anya Taylor-Joy about voicing Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie below.

As IGN reports, The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought in an estimated $368 million worldwide over its opening weekend, which is absolutely huge. It comfortably beat Frozen II’s record of $358 million, and also had the biggest global film opening of the year, completely squashing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s $225.3 million like it was nothing.

Even so, the film still has quite a way to go before it can take the crown of the highest grossing video game adaptation. Currently, that title belongs to Warcraft, which brought in around $439 million at the worldwide box office (thanks, Box Office Mojo). However, at the rate that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is going, it doesn’t seem unlikely that it’ll get there eventually.

Here at GAMINGbible, we’re big fans of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. In our review of the film, I wrote: “Anyone who’s played literally any Mario game before (and especially those familiar with other retro Nintendo goodness) are sure to be blown away by the film’s incredible attention to detail. This is more than a movie that takes inspiration from the main Mario series, it’s bursting with love for everything about the franchise and gaming in general, and is overall an immensely enjoyable time.”
