HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ Leaked Footage Shows Key Unexplored Backstory

Footage captured on the Calgary set appears to prove that The Last of Us will feature flashbacks to the early days of the outbreak.

I don’t think there’s a single fan of The Last of Us who isn’t hyped about the upcoming TV adaptation on HBO. With Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey set to portray Joel and Ellie, we’re surely in good hands - and everything that we’ve seen from the set so far looks great.

Earlier this week, leaked set footage proved just how faithful the series is set to be when compared to the game. That being said, it looks like The Last of Us series will also explore some new territory, delving into previously unexplored backstories.

We think The Last of Us has one of the best game openings of all time. Take a look at our other favourites below.

Fan account TheLastofUsTV recently shared a video to Twitter captured during filming in downtown Calgary, Canada. In the scene, trucks drove through a chanting crowd of extras as flares were set off. You could hear extras shouting “Freedom” and “F**k FEDRA” against a background of occasional gunfire.

This isn’t a sequence we play through during the game, so it looks like the show may include flashbacks to the early days of the outbreak when FEDRA attempted to establish Quarantine Zones (QZs) in various US cities.

We meet Joel and Ellie in the Boston QZ which remains under FEDRA rule, so that’s probably not what we’re seeing in this clip. Joel and Ellie’s journey does take us to Pittsburgh which we know was overrun by Hunters so that could well be what’s happening here.

It’s a hugely promising sight as The Last of Us series has the potential to explore backstories and similar aspects of the story that just wouldn’t suit the pacing of a video game. It would be great to see some of Tommy and Joel’s darker hunting days. I for one, cannot wait for an official trailer.
