Super Mario movie first look shared by Nintendo

Mama mia!

Nintendo has shared the first official look at Illumination's upcoming Super Mario movie, and it looks... pretty amazing, actually.

A full trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie (we're assuming this is the official title) will be revealed during a special Nintendo Direct this Thursday (October 6) at 9:05pm, UK time. We're expecting to get our first proper look at Chris Pratt's Mario, but will also no doubt be treated to a glimpse at Jack Black's Bowser, Charlie Day's Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy's Princess Peach. I still can't get over how wild that cast is.

Ahead of the full trailer, however, Nintendo has provided a teaser poster which you can see below. This is, as far as I can see, our very first look at the style of the movie - very exciting!

Honestly, I'm not sure what I expected. Illumination has done a brilliant job of taking the bright and colourful style Nintendo is known for and essentially running with it. The poster is absolutely gorgeous, and packed with details that fans will no doubt be obsessing over for weeks.

The jury remains out until the trailer drops later this week, but based on this poster? I've gone from completely wary to genuinely quite excited about The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Here's hoping that when it releases next April, it goes into the small pile of Good Video Game Adaptations, and doesn't get swept into the stack of rubbish ones next to Assassin's Creed and House Of The Dead.
