One man has decided to take it upon himself to port the entirety of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s map into Unreal Engine 5, and you can try out his work for yourself right now.
We still don’t know when The Elder Scrolls VI is going to release, but we do know what engine it’s going to use: Starfield’s Creation Engine 2.
Creation Engine 2 is, as the name probably already implies, an iteration of the engine that Bethesda used for both Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Funnily enough, Creation Engine is also a “forked” (essentially a modified duplication) iteration of the Gamebryo Engine, which was used to develop The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Bethesda is pretty set in their ways, it would seem, because the developer loves using their own custom video game engines for their projects. Obviously, this has its benefits, as the developers are likely very familiar with the Creation Engine at this point, but many were disappointed to hear The Elder Scrolls VI wouldn’t be utilising Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.
A very talented individual by the name of Greg Coulthard apparently took this personally, because they’ve decided to port The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s map into Unreal Engine 5. Why, you ask? Just for the love of the game, by the sounds of things.
As detailed in an article by Dark Side of Gaming's John Papadopoulos, Greg Coulthard's UE5 port of Skyrim just got a brand new update, based on the latest 5.6 update for Epic Games' game engine.
Now, keep in mind that this obviously isn’t an exact copy of Skyrim in a new engine. Even a technically illiterate moron like me knows that such a thing is far beyond the scope of a single person. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered needed a team of 4,000 people to make such a thing possible, so don’t expect the world from Coulthard’s port.

Instead, the UE5 version of Skyrim allows you to wander around a remade version of the entire map– just without any of the enemies or combat systems that the original game features.
If you fancy giving it a go for yourself, Greg was nice enough to upload the entire project for free online. I highly suggest checking out his Discord server if you want help getting it set up, too.
Here’s hoping that the Creation Engine 2 can produce something that’s, at the very least, on par with this.
