A Red Dead Redemption 2 fan is convinced that they found Gavin years ago.
“Gavin, has anyone seen Gavin?” Words uttered by the NPC, Nigel, in Red Dead Redemption 2, which players will be very familiar with.
In one sense, seeing this NPC roam the Wild West looking for his best friend breaks many hearts, but could there be more to this tale?
We might assume that Nigel is a sincere character who cares for his best buddy, but there’s also a chance that there’s a good reason why Gavin can't be found, a secret that developers at Rockstar Games refuse to tell.

Nigel and Gavin are from England, so it’s not unreasonable to assume the country of the USA is very much unknown territory for the duo. As such, Gavin may have wandered too far and gotten lost, or worse, he’s dead. It’s also possible that Gavin may have been kidnapped.
Some fans have also come up with a theory that Gavin is a figment of Nigel’s imagination, and that’s a reason why he can’t be found.
Furthermore, there is said to have been a letter hidden within the Red Dead Redemption 2 data files stating that Gavin had a restraining order on Nigel. If true, this might suggest that there’s a sinister story that we don't know about.
The truth is that no one, other than the developers, knows the truth behind Gavin’s whereabouts, but one player believes they may have the answer.

“I swear to god this has to be Gavin, more in the comments,” exclaimed Redditor DontTurnAround1.
“I just started Chapter 6, and was on my way to the widow in the northeast mission. I saw an X marking a dead body and went to look. I thought it may be a Murfee Brood ambush,” they continued.
“When I got there, a guy was getting off his horse to look at the body; it felt scripted. He didn't have any special dialogue. But this guy has a very similar outfit to Nigel.”
Fellow members of the Reddit thread were keen to weigh in on their theories about this John Doe NPC.

“No. Gavin is still out there,” declared a hopeful ShaunVdV1986.
“People have searched the entire game code, and there are no NPCs labelled as ‘Gavin’ or any scripted events beyond the guy endlessly searching for him,” replied a Reddit user.
“No, Nigel is Gavin,” claimed FlowWolves, alluding to the popular fan theory.
I guess we’ll probably never know the truth about Nigel and Gavin, and I hope we never do. Sometimes, the mystery is more interesting than the answer.
