Despite not being a main character, or even much of a side character, Gavin remains one of the best-known parts of Red Dead Redemption 2.

However, according to a collection of posts over on r/reddeadredemption, the truth surrounding this mysterious man may be a lot sadder than we initially thought.

Check out the launch trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 below!

For those unaware, players never actually meet Gavin throughout Red Dead Redemption 2 but instead come into contact with a friend of his, Nigel, who can be found throughout multiple cities across the map, calling out for his friend.

Nigel tells the player that he woke up one morning to discover that Gavin was missing and he has not been able to find him, ultimately asking the player if they have stumbled across him.

However, the player has not, as according to two theories, Gavin will never be found.

The first was shared by Reddit user bigdog1401 who posted the following information a couple of years ago.

“I read so many theories about Gavin, one of the most popular theories is that Gavin is the boy locked in the Rhodes gunsmith’s basement…

However, the guy chained to the bed under the gun shop is decidedly non-English (Gavin was born in England). Some mentioned finding him in a mine near Strawberry, kidnapped by the O’Driscolls, but that’s one of those stories that is pure garbage.”

The user goes on to claim that they met Nigel after Red Dead Redemption 2’s epilogue and he looks a lot older and is acting a lot more unstable.

Not only that but they draw attention to the fact that Gavin is not even listed in the credits of the Rockstar game.

This matches a second Reddit post from user battlewarrior7 who shared this heartbreaking news about the mystery man.

“The sad truth of Gavin’s friend”, the post begins.

“In the epilogue, you can find Gavin's friend in Blackwater still asking and looking around for Gavin.

If you interact with him, he tells you that he's been looking all these years and can't even remember what Gavin looks like.

My guess is that he has schizophrenia or something of the like that caused him to make up the memory of Gavin, as the sad truth is, Gavin isn't listed in the credits of the game.

Gavin never existed.”

This is heartbreaking news to say the least but it would definitely make sense.

However, if not, we could even meet the infamous Gavin in Red Dead Redemption 3.
