Pokémon Battle Advanced revisits the glory days with a free FireRed remake
FireRed is one of the most memorable instalments of the fabled Pokémon series, and still holds a very special place inside the hearts of a generation who grew up in Kanto.
The popular title has attracted a number of mods and remakes through the years; most recently, an Unreal Engine remake took an Arceus-like twist to the title, and the nostalgia alone was enough for it to be a momentary piece of art.
Now, a new formula has been adopted by a long-time FireRed fanatic, as Pokémon Battle Advanced takes the 3D fighting blueprint and applies a Pokopia graphics card to it.
Created by a member of the community under the alias of 'The Daigan', Pokémon Battle Advanced runs in browser and puts you back in Kanto with your choice of the legendary starter trio of Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur.
Yet the real pull is the way battles are constructed. Building on the old-school 3D Voxel mod, which changed the turn-based action into a physical 3D battleground, Battle Advanced allows you to take control of your 'mon by moving it around the arena and attacking at will to take down foes and a familiar Steel-type boss.
While we've definitely seen more advanced battlegrounds in newer Pokémon games, this take on FireRed is one that would have sent our ten-year-old brains into an excitement frenzy, which makes it worth every bit of attention.

The developer notes that AI has been used to assist with the coding, something that's becoming increasingly common with browser-based games, but there's also been a clear element of human development here, which is always good to see.
Interested players can now access it directly in your browser via Itch.io, with no downloads or modding required.
It's a fresh spin on Pokémon FireRed that looks to offer a very different experience from the original, and we're keen to see how the later boss battles against the likes of Mewtwo and Moltres play out as development continues.
