PS5 Is Getting A Highly Requested Feature This Year, Says PlayStation Boss

Play to win

2022 promises to be a big year for the PlayStation 5. Horizon Forbidden West is slated to launch next month, while God Of War Ragnarok is all but confirmed to drop before the end of the year. No doubt there'll plenty of other surprises between now and then, too.

But what can we expect from the new-gen console on a firmware level? While last year delivered a number of welcome updates, there are still a number of highly requested features that have yet to be implemented.

Take a look at the last major system software update for the PS5 below below!

Speaking at the hardware expo CES 2022 earlier this week, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan have fans a brief update on what we can expect from PS5 firmware updates in 2022. While he didn't give much away, he did confirm one highly requested feature is coming soon: PlayStation Tournaments.

Originally announced back in 2016 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Tournaments were created in collaboration with esports organiser ESL. The feature allowed players to compete in certain games for special prizes, essentially allowing gamers around the world to embrace a more competitive style of gaming without having to enter official tournaments - or leave the house.

Ryan stopped short of confirming what sort of shape this new Tournaments feature will take, but it's probably safe to assume that it won't be dissimilar to how it was on PS4.

No doubt players will be able to drop into games to both watch and actively compete, as PlayStation continues its push into the esports space. More news on the feature is expected later this year.
