HBO's upcoming live-action adaptation of The Last Of Us will include a "jaw drop" moment that was cut from the original game, it's been revealed. Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin, who's working on the the show with Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, revealed a ton of exciting new info about the game in a recent interview.

Speaking to the BBC, Mazin explained how the series will take material that was left out of the game and mix those elements in with the story players are familiar with.

"We're creating new [things] and re-imagining what is already there to present it for a different format," Mazin said. "Our goal is not to keep you in love with The Last of Us, but to make you fall in love with it again in a different way. It's a passive way of taking it in, instead of playing it, but you'll be experiencing more, with more characters in more ways.

"If you have played the game, our intention is that you will watch the show and say 'this has violated nothing of what I loved about the game, and what I witnessed in the game, but it has also brought me a whole lot more - things I did not know, really amazing things'."

While discussing his relationship with Druckmann, Mazin touched on the moment he learned about a cut piece of content from the game that he insisted had to be included in the show.

"Jaw drop - that's going in," he said. "For sure, we have to do that. You couldn't stop me doing that. You will have to shoot me [to stop me] from doing that. And there were a few things like that."

Mazin didn't elaborate on what exactly this jaw drop moment might entail, but it's good to know that even seasoned fans of The Last Of Us can go into the HBO series expecting one or two surprises along the way. The writer added that turning The Last Of Us into a show will allow us to dive into the relationship between Joel and Ellie in much greater detail, and take a little longer in doing so.

"For a time they were trying to make a movie of it and I can understand why it didn't work out. The joy of a story like The Last of Us is in its length," he said. "It's a journey, a slow creation of a relationship. We understand inherently that relationships earned over time are more precious and more deserving [of] defence."

HBO's The Last Of Us is still being written, with no news on casting or filming just yet. For now, check out our own dream cast list for the live-action show, and feel free to tell us how wrong we are.
