An Xbox 360 classic has returned better than ever, and its upgrade can be claimed for free, but there is a catch.
In 2010, Darksiders, an action-adventure game developed by Vigil Games and published by THQ, was released on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. While not a massive hit, it was still a fun game that appeared to garner somewhat of a cult following. Darksiders would later receive two sequels, in 2012 and 2018, respectively.
In 2016, it then received a remaster with Darksiders: Warmastered Edition on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was a decent improvement over its original version, supporting a native 1080p to 4K resolution, improved textures, lighting, character models, up to 60 frames-per-second, and more.
Recently, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition received another upgrade, this time for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, which makes it a remaster of a remaster.
Unfortunately, as brought to our attention by Insider Gaming, while this new remaster might be a welcome arrival for some fans, one set of gamers is getting the raw end of the deal.
Advert
With the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, which will have a crisper resolution and a more stable framerate, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition has also had a small price increase. The PS4 and Xbox One versions have jumped from £15.99/$19.99 to £24.99/$29.99. Which isn't the only issue.
If you want to upgrade this last-gen version of Darksiders: Warmastered Edition to take advantage of the new-gen upgrade, it will cost you an additional £7.99/$9.99. So, essentially, you’ll be paying an additional price for a remaster of a remaster that was released in 2016, but again, that’s not the only issue.

The main issue is that Xbox Series X/S users who already own the last-gen version of Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will get the latest new-gen upgrade for free, but PlayStation 5 users have to pay for it.
According to the article from Insider Gaming, publisher THQ Nordic, at the time of writing, has not explained why Xbox users get the upgrade for free, while PlayStation users have to pay. Hopefully, this is just an oversight, and everyone who owns the last-gen version can get the upgrade for free. But that might be wishful thinking on my part. Of course, this isn't bad news for Xbox gamers who will surely be delighted to jump into this nostalgic freebie.
Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
